I've boiled it down to one word, and that word is better. Wherever you are at the moment, the use of a standard, the implementation of a standard will make things better. It doesn't matter whether you are looking at the quality of products. It doesn't matter if you are trying to reduce the number of accidents in the workplace. You look at a standard, a well-made standard, and you implement it, you will make things better.

Every Workplace Can Save Lives:
The UK's First National Standard for Workplace Suicide Prevention Is Here

Someone in your workplace might be struggling right now. They might be sitting three desks away, or in the office upstairs, or working from home in silence. And they might not know how to ask for help.

BS 30480 has been created so that workplaces can be part of the answer - not part of the problem.

This is the UK's first national standard for suicide and the workplace, born from profound personal loss and built by people who understand that behind every policy, there's a human being. It's not about tick-boxes or compliance. It's about creating workplaces where people feel safe enough to speak up, where colleagues know how to respond with compassion, and where no one has to carry their pain alone.

The standard provides practical guidance on intervention, prevention, and support - but at its heart, it's about changing culture. About building organisations that genuinely care for the people who walk through their doors each day.

As named contributors to the standard, we understand both its technical requirements and its human heart. We're committed to making BS 30480 accessible and achievable for workplaces of every size. We know that implementing this standard isn't just about meeting requirements - it's about potentially saving lives and supporting those touched by suicide.

Whether you're a small business owner who knows every employee by name, or leading a team of thousands, this standard was written for you. Because every workplace, regardless of size or sector, can be a place where people find support instead of silence.

Lived Experience is at the Heart of the Standard

BS 30480 was created by Marcus Long, following the loss of his son Adam to suicide in 2020. Marcus's determination that something positive must come from this tragedy led him to develop the UK's first national standard for suicide and the workplace - combining his professional knowledge of standards with his deeply personal understanding of suicide's impact.

Watch Martin from Grief Guides and Marcus talk about the Standard, in an interview done ahead of an event held by the Met Police.
This work is further strengthened by the voices of others with lived experience, and we're privileged to be working alongside and be inspired by remarkable individuals and organisations, including:

Steve Philip from The Jordan Legacy
Mike McCarthy from Baton of Hope
Caroline Roodhouse from Daddy Blackbird
Angela Allen from Bags of Strife
Mick Rowe from Suicide Sucks
Nigel Linacre, creator of The Grief Opera

Their insight, courage, and advocacy help ensure that BS 30480 remains grounded in real human experience - not just policy and procedure.

Our goal is simple: to help you understand the standard, implement it effectively, and create meaningful change in your workplace.

From Standard to Practice

BS 30480 represents a significant step forward in how the UK addresses suicide in the workplace. But standards don't implement themselves - people do.

We're here to support you in making this happen. Not with jargon, not with judgement, but with practical help, genuine care, and a shared commitment to creating workplaces where everyone matters.

We're currently developing our full range of resources and training programme. These will include:

An interactive online tool (at bs30480.co.uk) to help you identify your organisation's needs and find the right training pathway

Role-specific guidance for senior leaders, HR professionals, line managers, and co-workers

Practical first steps for small businesses and organisations with limited resources

In-depth training delivered with care, expertise, and accessibility in mind

If you'd like to stay informed about our progress, or if you have questions about BS 30480 and what it might mean for your organisation, please get in touch. We're always happy to talk - whether that's about the standard itself, about your organisation's needs, or about how we might work together.
